About Dr Diaan van der Westhuizen
He joined the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2012 after completing his PhD at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and receiving a Fulbright Scholarship at North Carolina State University.He teaches in architecture and urban design, and is the convenor of the master in urban design programme.
His PhD research looked at the relative influence of spatial configuration, accessibility of destinations, density, and land use mix as contributing factors in the physical activity outcomes of multi-ethnic communities. This research is leading to theoretical and empirical papers that consider space and place as interrelated rather than discrete constructs.
