100 BEAUTIFUL THINGS: FuturePart 3️⃣

Theme: Future Thinking 🚀
-
FuturePart was established last year by architectural practice Boogertman + Partners as an interdisciplinary thinktank for rigorous research and experimental design, exploring the interaction between thinking and doing. It questions built-environment practices and investigates how these can be changed in a way that inspires and grows the industry. Says FuturePart curator and professional architect Nisha van der Hoven, “We pull the right skillsets together into projects that are not usually considered to be in the realm of architecture, providing an opportunity to explore different ways of ‘doing’ and to push boundaries.” This means working collaboratively with architects, filmmakers, scientists, artists, designers and sound engineers, and stepping outside the traditional architectural discipline to challenge the status quo. Having already worked with themes such as “The Future of Inclusionary Housing” and “Vertical Schools”, the FuturePart team, led by Boogertman + Partners directors Bob van Bebber and Francois Bredenkamp, presents films, exhibitions, events, talks, research publications and products relating to projects throughout Africa. It has even created a proposal that explores an alternative approach to marketing property, while its February exhibition, InCommon, at the Wits School of Architecture and Planning, addressed the possibilities of collective space. It looked at this through themes linked to play, designing in nature, connections with art and repurposing space, among others. When educational institutions shut their doors due to COVID-19, and the exhibition was cut short, FuturePart evolved it into an online panel discussion between its collaborators. In this fast response to changing times, they cleverly titled the conversation UnCommon, and in it shared their insights on the challenges of isolated spaces, working around the same themes used in the physical exhibition.
